[Heatwave, you say?]
Now, Starlingpaw would never dream of betraying her clan for another. But the young apprentice could happily admit that sometimes, being a Windclan cat had its downsides. Days like today were one of the biggest, glaring downsides she could think of.
The black and white apprentice was sprawled on her side towards the far side of the camp, as far from the fresh kill pile as she could get. Hey, it was hot! Some of the older pieces were starting to stink. "It's too hot." She groaned, running a paw over her ear. "Can't we take a bit of the river from Riverclan? Just for a day? We'll give it back." She told no one in particular, dazedly jabbering towards a wilted blade of grass. "Just borrowing it for a bit, really... I hate greenleaf." She'd never experienced greenleaf before, but this was enough to set her firmly against the season.
With a miserable huff, she pushed herself up and shook her off. She couldn't be the only one miserable. She wasn't the only dark cat in Windclan and most of them had far longer pelts then she had! Especially the poor elders and kits. Starlingpaw shook herself free of dried grass as she thought. Then she scratched behind her ear some. "I guess I could fetch them some water and moss..." It would probably ruin the elders nests, but they could come out into the camp if they wanted to be cool.
Her ears perked with interest at the thought of helping her clanmates, Starlingpaw set off on finding minions to aid her on her quest. She cast a yellow eyed gaze around the camp, trying to spot a warrior or apprentice that didn't look too busy. That took too long, so she fell back on her most useful trait. Starlingpaw took in a deep breath. "Anyone want to help me fetch water for the elders?" Starlingpaw bellowed, just so everyone could hear it. "So that they can stay cool and not have to go to the medicine cat!"
Maybe she could grab a mouse or two while she was at it, and they could have breakfast with their refreshments.

"C'mon now kit, at least you're not covered in as much hair as me." The long legged coon mix chuckled tiredly as she playfully batted at her apprentice's ear. She admired how personable and rambunctious the cat was but sometimes she needed to learn to hold her tongue a bit. But, that didn't mean her loudness didn't have it's uses, that was for sure! "And hush now, you'll wake the elders. You know how cranky the get on days like this. They'll have the both of us running with out tails between our legs."
Eaglestar grinned, towering over her young companion and shook her long coat free of grass and debris that may have been caught there before sauntering over to the camp entrance. She stood there for a moment before turning her lamp-like eyes to the small black and white she-cat, flicking her stump of a tail to signal for her to follow her. She knew the perfect spot to grab more moss that was luckily nearby to a small stream that twisted through their territory. Hopefully in this heat it hadn't all evaporated. If so, they'd have to go to the border - not that it was a big deal, though she'd yet to take her apprentice that far. She wasn't scared, but she was almost a bit nervous. Blackfang and Starlingpaw were quite similar... but also so different.
Shaking her shaggy head and taking a few hot gulps of air to try to cool her prickling skin, she pushed through the heavy gorse wall, grimacing as the thorns tugged her long fur. "Come on now Starlingpaw, we've got water to collect today." She mused, hoping that the apprentice would maintain her cheerful attitude.

Poor Starlingpaw hadn't even noticed Eaglestar, and she nearly jumped out of her fur when her mentor ambushed her. "I was really thinking of the cats with fur likes yours, Eaglestar. Honest." Starlingpaw protested, once she managed to get her heart back in her chest where it belonged. "If they keep sleeping in this heat they're going to make themselves feel sick." Starlingpaw muttered, but she spared a nervous glance to the elder's den. She didn't want cranky elders after her, especially when she was just trying to help! Elders sure were scary sometimes.
For a second, Starlingpaw was frozen. Eaglestar liked her idea? Eaglestar was going to help her? That was almost too much for her. Her brain managed to kick back into function against all odds and she scrambled after her mentor with only a nervous little squeak. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" She chanted merrily, prancing after Eaglestar like a show pony. She couldn't resist throwing her head up with pride and sweeping her tail up like a little banner. She looked sort of ridiculous, flouncing about like she was.
The thorns were kinder on Starlingpaw's sleek pelt then they were on poor Eaglestar. She spared her mentor a sympathetic look as she slipped through the barrier, but all sympathy was forgotten the second they left the camp. Adventure! Starlingpaw loved adventure! When on an adventure, the obvious thing an apprentice should do is wiggle around. "Do you want to race to the stream, Eaglestar?" They could have fun on their mission, too!
The apprentice froze, her ears flattening against her head as she seemed to realize something. "Oh, right! I've got to make sure there are no enemies!" Starlingpaw looked up at the sky, and then sniffed the ground. "It's clear, Eaglestar."

Eaglestar couldn't help but chuckle when Starlingpaw mewed enthusiastically exclaimed her excitement. It had been a while since she had met a cat with as much energy, and her own bobbed tail twitched upward; the small female's energy was infectious and the leader found herself walking with a small spring in her step as she started down the familiar trail. Her mind wandered idly on the things that needed to be done, hunting, reinforcing the gorse, but she was interrupted by the bright mew of a challenge but as she turned her head to respond the apprentice was already on to another topic.
"Whoa, slow down there, you're going to burn out before you even make it to warriorhood." She chuckled, slowing her long legged gait to stride almost effortlessly beside the smaller cat. She look around as well, lamp-like eyes scanning the area for weasels or the like; the air was clear as well. She nodded as Starlingpaw declared the area safe, grinning a bit as she remembered her days as an eager apprentice. Stopping for a moment she stretched, tensing her lean muscles for a moment before looking at her small friend out of the corner of her eye, grinning slyly.
"Still want that race?" She purred, flicking her stump of a tail. Though some mentors were a bit more distant with their apprentices, Eaglestar was never one to pass up a chance to make a new close friend, and she enjoyed younger cats just as much as she did her mature friends; even if younger meant more energetic.

"Nuh uh!" Starlingpaw couldn't imagine that she'd ever run out of energy. Sure, she saw the elders, but surely she wouldn't ever get old. She'd just be young forever! She did slow down a bit, sparing her mentor a nervous look. "I'm not being annoying, am I? My sister says I talk too much." She asked Eaglestar. The last thing she wanted was to be annoying. She wanted to be the best warrior she could be, for her brother. "I'm sorry, Eaglestar! I'll be more serious." She held her head high, schooling her features into those of a disciplined warrior.
All that went right out the metaphorical window when Eaglestar mentioned racing. Those wide, excited eyes turned back to her mentor. "Really?" She squeaked. "Yes! I bet I can beat you, Eaglestar! All that fur has to slow you down!" She dropped into what was probably meant to be a pre-race crouch, wiggling her rump in the air. "Just say the word, Eaglestar. Last one there's crowfood!" She chirped merrily.
So much for discipline. She really couldn't help it. She was excited! This was one of her first adventures out of camp since the death of her brother and she couldn't help but be happy to be in the presence of her mentor. Eaglestar was the best! She had to be the smartest leader in the whole forest. Which was obvious, really, since she was the Windclan leader. The other clans sucked.

Surprise struck Eaglestar's features as she looked down at the small cat. She was too young to worry about being 'annoying'; most apprentices just were and didn't care whether or not they aggravated the older cats. That was one of the joys of being young - irritating the crap out of other cats and never getting reprimanded for it! Though, perhaps the loss of their brother had made her sister a tad more harsh than she used to be... She wiggled her stump of a tail and nudged into Starlinpaw's side playfully.
"All work and no play makes for a cold cat." She said in her deep mew, chuckling once again. "It's good to be serious and work hard in your training, but it's also important to make yourself feel happy, even if that means goofing off once in a while. Work comes first though."
Watching the apprentice drop into a crouch of sorts, Eaglestar rolled her eyes with a good-natured laugh and flexed her lean body for a moment. She turned her head slightly to look at Starlingpaw, flicking her ears at her, whiskers twitching in amusement. Feisty one, this apprentice. "Ready, set, go!"
