Tawnywing lifted her head up to scent the air as she prowled, hoping to catch wind of some prey to take back to camp. She had been out for a while; sent on a hunting patrol with two of her clanmates. They were separated now, off at different parts of Windclan's territory. Tawnywing herself was getting close to the falls and path that marked where the Riverclan, Thunderclan and Windclan territories met.
The familiar scent of rabbit reached her nose and she turned her head to spot it. Tawnywing crouched, eyeing the rabbit she had earlier scented. She quietly stalked forward tensing and relaxing her muscles, preparing to leap, and chase if need be. Quickly she jumped forward, but the rabbit heard her and took off running. As soon as her paws hit the ground she took off as well.
She could see the path that marked the Thunderclan border ahead and attempted to speed up to catch the rabbit before it crossed over into the other clan's territory. She was closing in on it, just not fast enough. She swung her paw out in a desperate attempt, but the rabbit was just out of her reach. She slowed her pace and watched the rabbit slip over the border.
"Mousedung!" She mewled, frustrated, "I almost had it."

Aspenfur sat, fuming, her long grey tail flicking in irritation, and her eyes narrowed, staring at the brown slats of wood that made up the twoleg bridge. The slight breeze wafted past her flared nostrils, trailing the scents of both Thunderclan and Windclan, which made sense because she was the closest to their territories as she could get, without crossing the line. And as far away from camp and her mother as she could possibly get.
She loved her mother, honestly. Morningclaw had devoted her life to seeing her first litter grow up to healthy successful warriors, and it had worked. Except Aspenfur sometimes felt that her mother had never stopped mothering and it left a bad taste on her tongue knowing that soon she would have to return to cap and apologize because that is what kin does, no matter how ugly the fight had been or how wrong the other she-cat was. She couldn't fight with her family too long, because they meant too much to her, a problem that seemed in thought a good one to have but in practice made loosing a very real and constant part of her life, something she didn't like at all.
The wind shifted again, bringing to her attention, the scent of a rabbit. She could taste the bitter sweat and fear coursing through the prey, allowing her to zone in on its position. It was thundering from the edge of Windclan towards Thunderclan. She stood, anger buried but not forgotten, as she caught the scent of the chasing cat. Both animals sped into view, and Aspenfur was once again reminded and impressed by just how fast the Windclan cats were. Being Riverclan had it's own perks of course, being the only cats who truly thrived among water.
Her tail stood straight up, curling at the tip, in a hopefully not so aggressive posture, telling the other she-cat, you're getting awfully close to Riverclan, better be careful. While Aspenfur would never outright attack another clan, she most certainly could speed right back to camp and announce the breach of territory. the rabbit slipped away, dashing into the bushes of Thunderclan, as the other she-cat, slim and rusty pelted, skidded to a halt and meowed a curse.

Tawnywing glared at the bushes the rabbit had disappeared into. Hunting wasn't her strongest skill, she could admit that, after all every warrior had weaker skills. But this was just pathetic.
No, getting irritated at herself for such a small problem was pathetic. Getting angry wouldn't make the prey appear beneath her paws.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath to expel her frustrations, and breathed in to scent the air once again. The smells of the other two clans hit her nose. But the scent of Riverclan was stronger than normal. Was there a patrol going by? Were there cats coming to attack? Tawnywing felt her fur stand on end and muscles tense at the thought. Her claws unsheathed as she turned to face the only spot along the border that Riverclan would be able to cross over into Windclan territory.
She saw an ashen pelted shecat sitting on the edge of the border of her territory. Tawnywing could tell that the shecat had spotter her as well, seeing as she was standing alert as if she were waiting for Tawnywing to advance in an attack.
Tawnywing's fur fell back down, recognizing the lack of an immediate threat from the Riverclan cat. She stared, curious as to what the shecat was doing, seemingly alone, on the edge of her territory.

Aspenfur scented the air, trying to pick up the smell of aggressive intent. The rusted she-cat smelled nothing like prickling or thunder; she smelt like berries, intrigued, if not slightly defensive and Aspenfur felt that it might be okay to let her guard down. She sat back down, warily, but comfortably, curling her tail over her paws and twitched her nose, watching the other she-cat's fur fall flat again, mimicking Aspenfur's level of defense.
Aspenfur wanted to take a few steps closer to the she-cat, to meet her, so that she didn't have to yowl, but she was at the edge of Riverclan territory. Any mouse length forward would be Windclan, and therefore dangerous, a breach in the Warrior Code. She didn't want to start an unnecessary war, especially since she didn't like fighting in the first place.
She scented the air again, tasting the fine fresh breeze and light dust of the Windclan she-cat, but couldn't sense any hostility. She swallowed, fighting down nerves. She should have just gone back to camp, should have just turned around the minute she'd scented another cat, but returning meant apologizing and apologizing felt like ripping a claw out. She'd rather risk an encounter with an potential enemy than that. At least right now.
She opened her mouth, yawned to relax herself, and meowed, "Hello, Windclan."

Tawnywing stared skeptically at the shecat upon hearing her greeting. Why was this Riverclan cat attempting to talk to her? Tawnywing was tempted to turn away and continue hunting. She knew that if she were to be caught talking to a cat from another clan while she was supposed to be on patrol she would chastised, probably mildly, but chastised nonetheless. And if the shecat was a distraction for an ambush. . .
However, Tawnywing was well aware that having allies in other clans was always a good thing. Until you have to fight them in battle, but, Tawnwing didn't do friends. Sentimental attachments to cats within their own clan didn't even work out some of the time, why any cat would think that attachments to cats outside of their own clan would ever work alludes her. All it did was tear a cats loyalties during a battle; makes them lose focus. And focus was critical in a fight.
She pondered her options for a few more heartbeats before cautiously she padding closer to the twoleg bridge, being careful not to cross over on to Thunderclan territory on the other side of the path. She came to a stop just off of the bridge and sat down, finally sheathing her claws.
"Riverclan" She mewed in greeting, "What are you doing this close to the border of your territory?"

Aspenfur could practically smell the skepticism and doubt pouring off of the Windclan she-cat. She nearly purred in delight; it was amusing to have someone think she would just blatantly attack them. What's more it was flattering. Aspenfur didn't due physical fighting, much like Shadowclan cats didn't really do the whole lets be friends shindig either. To think that her reputation (if she had one outside of her clan, she didn't know), hadn't spread further than her clan was ultimately satisfying. And relieving.
The she-cat inched forward, carefully inspecting Aspenfur as she cautiously avoided Thunderclan territory. Aspenfur watched her quietly, blinking, as the she-cat settled herself at the end of the twoleg bridge and sheathed her claws. That was somewhat of a relief.
The two cats were now about five tail lengths away and Aspenfur flicked her ear as the she-cat answered, "Riverclan. What are you doing this close to the border of your territory?"
Feeling slightly insulted that the she-cat would think she'd just give up whatever knowledge she had, Aspenfur debated being rude or just answering. She was already peeved about her mother, the anger settling into irritation as the situation smoothed out, but that didn't mean she wasn't looking for at least a little respect, even if it came from the lone huntress of another clan.
"Well, it would appear that I've been sitting here." She glanced surreptitiously to the right, then left, and leaned forward to hiss quietly, "But it appears that I'm actually trying to start a conversation."
She might have made a tense situation worse, but Aspenfur was if anything, fiery and fiesty, and sometimes just a little contradictory.

Tawnywing actually relaxed more hearing the shecat's fiery response, despite being able to smell the irritation on the cat. She let out a huff of amusement.
"Now there's no need for that, Riverclan. I wasn't intending to insult. It was just," she paused, "passing curiosity, However if you would like me to aim to insult, I would be more than willing, though I don't think that would make for very good conversation," She added playfully, in a way to try not to get dragged into a verbal standoff with Riverclan cat, no matter how entertaining it would be. Tawnywing was not here to agitate or create a tense environment. She actually liked this one, though Tawnywing has always been partial to the feister cats. They weren't always as helpful as she would like but, they were engaging. Much more fun to be around than the less wily ones.
"Now might you have a name? I can't call you 'Riverclan' forever, you know" She asked, attempting to not sound the least bit demanding, knowing that wouldn't strike the shecat in the right way. "I'm Tawnywing." She offered up, hoping offering up her own name first would make the Riverclan cat more open to giving up her own.

Aspenfur blinked, taking in the sudden mood change of the she-cat. It was like being mildly rude and somewhat offended had relaxed the she-cat, rather than enrage her, which for Aspenfur was a very good thing.
But then the she-cat huffed in amusement and spoke, and that yet again, sparked Aspenfur's temper. The Windclan warrior was laughing at her. Was her reply not clever enough; did the she-cat think she was superior to Riverclan? Knowing she was letting her anger spiral dangerously, Aspenfur pulled herself in check, testing the air and attitude of the she-cat and finally, finally relaxed, feeling slightly dazed as the last of the residual anger at her mother that she'd been trying to take out on the other warrior drain away. The warrior was merely attempting some banter, not looking down at Aspenfur.
"Now might you have a name? I can't call you 'Riverclan' forever, you know." There was what sounded like controlled condescension in her voice, but Aspenfur felt that maybe it was just a Windclan thing, or maybe she was just still trying to pick a fight, because the she-cat was at least being pleasant. "I'm Tawnywing."
In the two Gathering's Aspenfur had been to, she'd only heard once about a Windclan cat called Tawnywing, as a just recently promoted warrior. She had only been mentioned in passing, but Aspenfur liked to remember things that never made sense; she did it to annoy Oaktail, who constantly complained she wasted her intelligence on useless information, instead of focusing on the truly important.
"Aspenfur." She paused, thinking of something more polite to say. "You almost had that rabbit, by the way. I don't know how all Windclanners are so fast."

The sudden spike of anger that came off of the shecat was unexpected. That was the reaction Tawnywing had been trying to avoid. Though she shouldn't have been to surprised, clan cats aren't very trusting of cats from other clans, not unless they know each other well. She's had enough meetings with other-clan cats to know that it's almost as if they dissect conversations for things to be cross with.
"Well it is nice to meet you Aspenfur" she purred.
Satisfaction flowed through her at Aspenfur's attempts to be polite. Now they were making progress. Hopefully they could continue this trend. And hopefully she could continue to say the right things to not trigger an unpleasant reaction from the shecat. Tawnywing was still figuring out how exactly to talk to this one without rousing anger or irritation.
"We've had to adapt to our land. It's not like we have much to conceal ourselves as we stalk our prey, like the other clans. If we weren't swift we would starve!" she mewled merrily, "Now learning to actually enjoy being in the water? That's amazing" Tawnywing said with a tone of jest, "I don't know how you Riverclanners do it. When my pelt gets wet i'm miserable until it dries."

Aspenfur knew she was leaking feelings like a tree leaked sap but she just couldn't seem to shake the edge of irritation. She wasn't even mad at Tawnywing, who was doing her best to be polite and kind. It was just second hand annoyance as the edges of her recent fight were poked. It was the way she couldn't swallow her guilt. She shook her head, ruffling her fur, then stood, shaking her body, as she listened to Tawnywing explain the changes Windclan warriors went through to be able to hunt as well as they did.
It intrigued Aspenfur to hear about the Windclan adaptations. She settled back down, listening intently as Tawnywing explained the lack of cover in Windclan territory. It made sense, if Aspenfur had put any real thought into it, but she'd never tried. That's just the way things were in the forest. Riverclan could swim, Thunderclan could stalk, Shadowclan could prowl, and Windclan could run.
She started when Tawnywing offered her the chance to speak. Twitching her whiskers in slight thanks, Aspenfur meowed, "Well your coat has something to do with it. In Riverclan, we don't get a lot of shaggy hair cats, and even when we do, our coats seem to have two layers. One to keep the water off of us, and one to keep us warm in the water. It's useful but sometimes we all get really bad hairballs during shedding season." She offered the last sentence as a slight attempt at humor, her tail flicking with enjoyment.

Tawnywing widened her eyes to look intrigued and to make it seem as if she didn't already know about Riverclan cats' fur. She had always loved learning things about other clans. Not necessarily secret intel, like what life their leader was on, but facts about what set clans apart from each other. The forest stalking techniques of Thunderclan, the viscous fighting style of Shadowclan, things you could find out by just watching, looking, paying attention. Of course she loved to find out clan 'secrets' as well but those little things, like how they fight or hunt, are what make a clan tick. If she knew as much as she could about each clan, she had a definite advantage, that would become useful in the future.
Now Tawnywing knows that she'll never be able to master the fighting styles of other clans, not unless one of their warriors teaches her as a mentor would teach an apprentice. But knowing the technicality of their procedure would help her fight them more efficiently in battle.
"I bet having layered coats can sometimes be useful in a fight too. Warriors would claw at you and come back with a pawful of your pelt" She meowed, amusement in her tone.

Aspenfur paused for a second, thinking carefully about what Tawnywing had said. Yes, having an extra layer in her fur did make it harder to scratch deeply, but the way Tawnywing had said it soundly slightly off. Was the Windclan she-cat prying for information? Did she really think Aspenfur was going to give up clan secrets?
Of course, Aspenfur had to be careful. It wasn't strange to talk to other clans along the border, and it probably wasn't uncommon to try to find clan weaknesses or strategies. Aspenfur just hadn't really encountered it before. She hadn't been to a gathering yet, although she was pretty sure she was going this moon. She didn't think she was being overly suspicious either, since theoretically the Tawnywing was just doing her job and she didn't blame the rusted she-cat for it either. Aspenfur felt that maybe, she wasn't doing what she was supposed to.
"Ah, no." She lied, twitching her whiskers. "No, it doesn't work like that. Fur is fur, no matter how thick."

Tawnywing narrowed her eyes hearing the pause before Aspenfur's answer. She knew she hadn't been as subtle as she could have been, but still she felt a small wave of irritation upon hearing the Riverclan cat's lie. She mentally shook it off, no need to become frustrated. One of them was already quick to anger no need for the both of them to be.
"Well, if only, right?" she mewled in response, "I for one would love to have something that would help protect my skin in battle, seeing how thin our coats are" That was a lie. Windclan pelts weren't thinner than any other clan's pelts, except Riverclan that is. But giving out false information could turn out to be useful, if Aspenfur took it as the truth that is. If not, it was worth a shot, it's not as if the Riverclan cat not believing her would change anything. Either way it was a game she loved to play. "But as you said, fur is fur no matter how thick"

Aspenfur nodded, thinking that yes, it would make sense if Windclan had thinner coats that other cats. Toting around too much fur would make it harder to run as fast as they had to. It was good information to tell her clan mates, something to use in battle. Maybe she was better at this whole subterfuge than she thought. It didn't seem that hard, if she was honest.
She didn't know how much more she could talk about fur, but wanted to keep trying to get more information out of Tawnywing. Windclan and Riverclan had had their issues in the past, especially along the ravine border, and she really wanted to help out her clan. Part of Aspenfur realized she was just avoiding returning to camp and dealing with her mother. The prospect made her mouth sour and the idea of talking with Tawnywing more appealing.
Aspenfur yawned, stood, stretched, shaking out her left paw as it began to fall asleep. "Do you think you'll be going to the gathering this moon?"

"I'm not sure, though I would love to go, if Eaglestar will allow it. I love going to gatherings, it gives me a chance to get caught up with my friends" Or really get caught up on other clans' happenings. It's quite easy to walk around and evesdrop, before the leaders speak, pretending to be looking for a 'friend'. Of course Tawnywing doesn't believe everything she hears, most of it is gossip and rumors, which can serve their own purposes occasionally. But what she really looks for are the cats talking to their own clanmates. Apprentices and younger warriors have looser lips, which makes it more likely for them to accidentally let something important slip.
She was still working on reading other cats, and gatherings made for good practice. She also loves watching the leaders. They all tell the same generic information, new warriors, how the prey is running. But, watching how they act when the relay the news tells more than the words they speak. Of course it helped to be closer to the leaders so she could actually see them closer up, and it was hard to get a closer spot when she was off hunting for information. So, not much 'reading' practice always gets done at gatherings. It doesn't stop her from trying though.
