A low chuckle rumbled from the tom’s ginger chest as Brackenpaw whipped out of camp faster than a WindClan cat after a rabbit. Perhaps the warrior should have been angry. Perhaps he should have called out a warning yowl. But only concern for the apprentice would cause anger to flick up in Foxfang, and at the moment he was certain that the other was safe. Let him has his fun.
It took a good bit of effort for Foxfang to make his own way through the bramble entrance. Thorns clung to his thick pelt possessively, and the bushes themselves seemed to grip his broad shoulders. Finally, with an immense rattling of the foliage, the tom managed to break free –a sheepish grin plastered upon his face. Yes, being large did certainly have its advantages, but with every gift came a drawback.
As the warrior drew closer to the younger cat he flicked his tail warmly at the other’s ears. “Be careful now,” Foxfang mewed as he craned his head to look up the somewhat steep exit of the ravine. It was common for younger cats to struggle as they made their way up the path of loose dirt and smooth stones, and a pang of worry unexpectedly raced through the older cat. “You go first, and go slow. Pick the way carefully and try to keep solid stone under foot.”
By making the other feline go first he could keep his paws from sending stones raining down upon Brackenpaw’s head, as well as catch him if things went wrong. He was determined to not let his apprentice get hurt on the first day.
--- OOC: Just to make sure this is obvious -it is probably still before noon for the cats, and the sky is clear and hot.

Brackenpaw waited for his mentor, panting after his excited dash. But he calmed himself down, knowing that it was time to be responsible. The forest was dangerous, even though it was regularly patrolled by warriors. He would need to be careful if he was going to survive. He craned his neck to look for Foxfang and found him padding out of the tunnel. He got caught in thorns and looked sheepish about it, but Brackenpaw didn't see the problem. His mentor was so big, he couldn't even fit and that was impressive, because not even Palewhisker was that large.
Finally Foxfang reached him, and Brackenpaw looked up at him, watching him closely, waiting for the next instructions. Foxfang gently flicked his tail across his ears and meowed, “Be careful now. You go first, and go slow. Pick the way carefully and try to keep solid stone under foot.”
Brackenpaw nodded eagerly and began climb up the steep ravine. It was hard work, the stones kept slipping out from under his paws, and the dirt was sliding around. He had to dig his claws into the earth and he didn't like it. It made his paws feel chunky and gritty. By the time he reached the top, he was panting, but proud to have made it.
The world above the ravine was amazing. The trees were huge, rustling slightly in the breeze, there were bushes, and different scents. Scents that weren't just cat floated past his nose and he inhaled deeply. He was a little bit intimidated, the forest seeming huge, so he turned around and stuck his head over the edge, looking for Foxfang.

Fear, strong and dominant, gripped the tom and caused the hackles to line up upon his spine. Little showers of dirt trouble his whiskers, but he paid no heed. Brackenpaw’s ascent was his only concern. Despite Foxfang’s worries the golden patched apprentice made it to the top, and the large warrior felt himself releasing his held breath. It was as if the little to-be warrior was the son he never had, the son he’d always wanted. Or do I have a son? Either way, he certainly was already beginning to feel fatherly for the younger cat.
Without trouble the large feline leapt up the ravine’s slope and in a few easy bounds landed besides his apprentice. His paw’s aching was effortlessly pushed aside so that it would not hinder his travel. The wound of a thorn often healed quickly to only leave behind a fading dull ache, and Foxfang found himself feeling grateful that StarClan hadn’t deemed right to give him a larger wound.
“Stay behind or besides me now.” The warrior meowed in his usual cold tone, his green gaze checking the other to make sure they were okay to go on. “Many warriors have been injured or killed where we are heading first.” He left their exact destination unsaid, but partly wondered if the other had already guessed. Some kits seemed quicker to pick up what lay in the forest from the elders’ tales, while others spent too much time play fighting or trying to escape to be bothered with the wise cats’ lessons. Which was his apprentice?
Without waiting for a response, the warrior padded forward into the dense undergrowth with his ginger tail held high. A small path wove past the junipers and through the ferns. Countless border patrols heading to check on ShadowClan had gone this very same way, and the recent scent of one lingered now on the air.

Brackenpaw wondered what he did wrong. Foxfang was back to acting like he didn't want another apprentice and it had to be Brackenpaw's fault. Maybe he was clumsy coming up the ravine. Foxfang probably thought he didn't have the ability to even learn the right ways to fight or hunt. And he was probably right. Brackenpaw felt his spirits rise. How was he ever going to be better than Spottednose if he was already failing?
He quickly fell instep behind Foxfang, letting his tail droop at its tip. He hated being in second place. He knew he wasn't very strong, he knew he wasn't very brave, but he could be better, he could train harder than any other apprentice ever, and then things would be better. He'd show Foxfang. He would be the best apprentice that even Littlestar would have to acknowledge him.
He cheered himself up quickly thinking about where they were going. It had to be Snakerocks. No other place in Thunderclan territory would be dangerous to warriors. Well, Sunningrocks maybe, if they met a Riverclan patrol, but that was unlikely because there was no way Foxfang would accidentally run into a patrol. He was much to amazing for that.
Brackenpaw was starting to fall behind, the ginger warrior's legs outmatching his, and he had to trot to keep up. Soon, he was panting.

Tendrils of acid stench began to weave themselves around the depths of the forest’s floor, settling into the pits like some sort of poisonous liquid. It could not be seen, but it wasn’t long until Foxfang reached close enough to their destination to scent it. They would come to the edge of the forest soon, and then ShadowClan’s smell would add to the overbearing odor.
The warrior paused and cast his green gaze back towards the panting apprentice. Guilt crept into his paws as he realize he’d overestimated how fast the young cat could go. He had failed his clan the day before when chatting to the kittypet, and now was he already failing again in training Brackenpaw. No, he’d make up for his mistakes and split loyalty. He’d make Brackenpaw the warrior he deserved to be, and nothing would get in the way of that.
“Come stands beside me now, but keep close and do not run off. “ If the apprentice bolted in the wrong direction then everything would be lost. Foxfang had the sudden urge to pick the smaller cat up by his scruff and carry him there. It would be easy, and it would keep him safe. But, it wouldn’t give the younger cat a chance to prove himself and grow.
As he waited for the other to catch up to him the ginger tabby’s eyes were wide with worry. “Remember, stay by my side no matter what” meowed the tom cooly. The feline then stepped through the last of the clinging foliage and arrived upon the edge of the Thunderpath.

Still clinging to his excitement, Brackenpaw's sides were heaving. He was a little ashamed to be tired, but quickly reminded himself that it was his first day out. Palewhisker had told him that it would be hard to keep up and that his mentor wouldn't go easy on him. This day was devoted to learning stamina and temperament. He wasn't going to show anything but positivity and endurance today.
An acrid scent flew into his nose on his next deep inhale. It made his mouth and eyes water and he couldn't help but throwing out a few sneezes. His nose starting running and he sniffled. With a burst of realization, he figured out they were going to the Thunderpath. He tail twitched with excitement and he desperately wanted to run ahead and see it. But Foxfang had specifically told him to stay behind him.
Brackenpaw's mentor was slowing down, so he quickly fell into step with Foxfang. "Remember, stay by my side no matter what." Foxfang cautioned. So Brackenpaw nodded his agreement and stepped with the warrior through the foliage.
The acrid scent was so powerful here that he almost retched. He tried to breathe through his nose but it burned his throat. The Thunderpath was huge and black and it looked like it was made of hard thick material like a rock. A low rumble started in the distance and quickly turned into a roar. A shiny black monster screamed by and Brackenpaw couldn't help himself; he spat in fear, bristling and backing away stiff legged. As the monster faded, his ear's drooped. He'd failed the test.

As the dull thrum quickly changed into a growing ferocious roar filled with untold power and vehemence Foxfang’s eyes flashed instinctively towards the golden cat besides him. His right foreleg shot out as if to block the cat from possibly darting into the monster’s path, and the fur upon his tail fluffed up. All it took was one mistake. One wrong move and a cat could easily be crushed beneath the black paws.
Brackenpaw’s reaction, though, was not the mistake the ginger warrior had feared, and relief flooded his form. Bolting would have been the wrong choice, so putting on a strong front was anything but bad. While it showed the cat was afraid, only a mousebrain would not be. Indeed, the little fierce show of spitting and bristling fueled a crooked smile to cross the warrior’s maw.
Giving a conspiring look at his apprentice, Foxfang lowered his voice as if telling an imperative secret. “I was so afraid when my mentor first brought me here that I ran halfway back to camp before she caught up with me.”
The warrior then straightened up and padded slowly towards the dark, smelly stone the monsters ran on. Cautiously, he cast a glance both ways as listened intensely. When he was certain it was momentarily safe, the tabby placed one pad upon the warm surface of the Thunderpath. “This marks our boarder with ShadowClan. Breathe in now and you’ll be able to scent their stench. Remember it well for it is likely you will meet them in battle.”

Brackenpaw's tail curled with delight when Foxfang confessed his secret. He appreciated his mentors attempt to him feel better and he was glad to know that he wasn't actually being judged for it. He couldn't picture Foxfang actually running away from anything but he guessed it made sense. After all, the twolegs were insane; nothing they did actually made sense. It was better to be wary of them than to be foolhardy.
Foxfang stepped closer the the Thunderpath and Brackenpaw wanted to tell him to stop, but the warrior didn't seem frightened. He was alert and suspicious, but Brackenpaw could find no fear scent emulating from him. Brackenpaw followed him, still rigid, but following his orders, staying right next to his mentor.
“This marks our boarder with ShadowClan. Breathe in now and you’ll be able to scent their stench. Remember it well for it is likely you will meet them in battle.” Foxfang explained, one paw bravely on the path.
Brackenpaw nodded, inhaling deeply, trying to scent past the acrid taste of twolegs. He caught a wet cloyingly musty smell that must have been Shadowclan. He didn't like it at all, the scent lingering in his nose. It wasn't fresh and open and clean like the forest. It stuck to him in a nasty way. Then, carefully mastering his fear, he batted at the Thunderpath, it was hard and tough and just like the Shadowclan scent, he didn't like it.

A surge of pride flowed through the tom’s ginger limbs as he watched his golden apprentice bat at the Thunderpath with one brave paw. He was trusting and obedient, both qualities that made for a great warrior. Perhaps, even a deputy. Foxfang let a smile play upon his maw as he contemplated the future of the brave little apprentice before angling his head towards their left.
“Now, let’s go see if the four great trunks are still standing at Fourtrees.” While he was confident enough to saunter up to the path of the monsters, he was still eager to escape to the safety of the forest once more. It took more effort than he would have guessed to keep from bounding into the open arms of the leafy bushes. Yet, he was still hurried as he padded away from the strange smelling stone. As he went his ears remain fixated upon his apprentice’s location, just in case. He would not let a monster ruin the growing cat’s life.
As cool shade replaced the sun’s angry glare and Foxfang felt his shoulders relax. The proximity of the clustered tree trunks and assorted plants was comforting to the ThunderClan cat. He took his time to enjoy the scenery as his paws slowly carried him through the territory, allowing Brackenclaw to, hopefully, keep pace. They had a long path ahead of them yet, and Fourtrees was only their second stop. If everything went smoothly they’d be able to hook back around to Sunningrocks before the apprentice would be too utterly worn out.

Brackenpaw followed his mentor, tail standing proudly. He felt bold, like he belonged out here, with Foxfang. And it occurred to him that he did. He was Thunderclan, he was on his way to become a warrior, this was his right to be here. To protect and hunt and fight for his clan. He deserved to be here just as much as any Thunderclan warrior, and he would do his absolute best to prove that to anyone who said otherwise.
The thought quelled something deep inside of him, something that had been spewing anxiety and fear into his heart. He wondered if it was going to come back later, but for now, it felt good, felt right to be here.
They slid into the cool shade of the forest, every one of Foxfang's step, two of Brackenpaw's and they traveled. Brackenpaw's pace increased at seeing Fourtrees. The four tall oaks of the sacred Gathering place made his heart buzz. One day, he would join the ranks of cats who went to the Gatherings, join them as a warrior with a proud name, a bold name, a name that wouldn't be forgotten. Something like Brackenclaw, or Brackenheart.
With a day dream in his heart, Brackenpaw followed Foxfang further into the forest.
