Aspenfur stretched and yawned, her tail curling up, and her lips rising high above her teeth. The day was fresh and she felt good. It was still too hot and she wasn't pleased with out shallow the stream the surrounded the camp looked, but then again, it might be a good thing. No kit could be taken by the current today. It didn't bode well for the protection of the camp, since it was the water that stopped other clans from attacking.
She shook her fur, ignoring the thoughts as they whizzed around her head. She'd neglected her apprentice yesterday, something she knew she shouldn't have done. She hoped maybe another warrior had taken Minnowpaw out, but she couldn't have been sure. So she was determined to devote the entire day to her. It was the only way to make up for yesterdays mistake.
A small part of her wanted to blame her mother, for picking the fight in the first place. But that was unacceptable and a poor excuse, since Aspenfur knew she could have still trained Minnowpaw. She yawned again, trotted towards the center of camp where the early morning sun was already beating down on camp. She wouldn't wake Minnowpaw just yet, but let the apprentice come and find her. Lazy mornings were sometimes some of the best.

Minnowpaw rolled over on her pile of moss, lost in a dream. A beam of sun streaming in through the den warmed her face, and her hazel eyes flickered open lazily. With a sudden realization and a burst of adrenaline she leapt out of her mossy nest. How late was it? Had she slept in? Aggravation made her short silver fur fluff up. She had wanted to catch the morning patrol, maybe tag along with them. But the she-cat was sure she had missed them by now, and the apprentice had no one to blame but herself.
She flattened her fur with a pink tongue hurriedly and picked out a few bits of moss, though she was sure she had missed some. With that finished, Minnowpaw bounded out of the apprentice’s den. Mousedung, she cursed in her head; the patrol had already left. Oh well, maybe the evening patrol would let her tag along. She certainly had the energy to keep up, even if she wasn’t that experienced. If anything the apprentice would have made the patrol fun. There were times when she felt that the older warriors didn’t know the meaning of the word; Minnowpaw, on the other paw, couldn't stand to be bored.
But before she had the chance to ask around about the next group of cats leaving, she spotted a familiar form in the middle of camp. “Aspenfur!” She called, running up to her mentor with short, powerful strides. Training, now that was never boring. “What’s up? What’re we doing today?” Her long tail flicked to and fro behind her as she waited eagerly.

Aspenfur watched her apprentice bound towards and she felt a warm buzz of pride zip through her. Minnowpaw was eager and excited to learn, and her unending interest in everything made Aspenfur glad she was young. She wasn't sure if she could have kept up with the young she-cat.
“What’s up? What’re we doing today?” Minnowpaw asked, flicking her tail.
Aspenfur purred, pressing her muzzle gently against Minnowpaw in an attempt to calm her down. She was grateful her apprentice had stamina but she was easily distracted and sometimes forgot things when she was too excited. She wanted to make sure that Minnowpaw knew what she was getting into before she decided what they were going to do today. Aspenfur thought Minnowpaw would learn best if she had a choice. Eventually, Aspenfur knew they would cover everything, but the freedom to pick seemed to make Minnowpaw content to learn.
"Today," Aspenfur meowed, friendly but trying to be authoritative. "We can either learn how to climb trees, or hunt without a river nearby." She paused, deciding to explain the options. "Tree climbing doesn't seem like a very important but it can help in a fire, or when escaping enemies like twolegs or dogs. However, hunting without the river is important. Sometimes, our river is low or the twolegs will mess with it and we'll have to avoid it. Droughts are bad for us as well, and it's important to learn how to survive without it. What do you think?"

Minnowpaw pressed back against her mentor, feeling the vibrations from her purring and responding in kind. She knew well that she was lucky to have a mentor like Aspenfur, and so far, she was turning out to be pretty good at it. Minnowpaw liked her style at least.
Her ears pricked as the older she-cat began talking, and the apprentice considered her words very carefully. “The river or the trees…” She murmured, mostly for her own benefit. After a few heartbeats, she looked back up at the warrior, eyes bright. “Well, if any twolegs or dogs showed up, I think we’d be able to fend them off,” she said perhaps a little too loudly, head held high and chest puffed up with pride. It was all she could do to keep her claws from unsheathing and digging into the soft earth below as a demonstration of her confidence.
But her voice soon quieted and a slightly more serious look spread across her face. “But from the looks of it, the river seems more… I don’t know… Threatening?” The apprentice didn’t mean for the last part to come out as a question. She flicked her tail towards the river that surrounded the camp. “After all, you can’t force a river to flow. Fish might be my favorite prey, but I guess it can’t hurt to try something new.” She settled onto her haunches, tail lying still on the ground. “Hunting it is.” Minnowpaw would have preferred to hunt in the river; it was hot enough as it was. Silently she thanked StarClan for her short silver-gray pelt as opposed to a long one.

Aspenfur nearly died with pride as Minnowpaw explained her reasoning. A respect for the river wasn't ingrained in cats but it came very close in her apprentice. The river was an essential part of life, all life, and very few cats gave it the respect it deserved. Some cats pretended to understand the river and that got them killed. Minnowpaw seemed to grasp it's power and account for that. Aspenfur had never need to explain that to her and it made her mentorship much easier.
"Good logic." She congratulated Minnowpaw. "We'll go hunting, today, and tree climbing tomorrow. New choices soon."
Flicking her tail over her apprentice's ears, Aspenfur trotted out of camp. She knew Minnowpaw would follow her and part of her wanted to race towards the river. But that was irresponsible and somewhat kit-ish and that was not how a mentor would act. She would race Minnowpaw when they were away from prying eyes.

Minnowpaw felt her heart swelling with pride at Aspenfur’s compliment. While she wasn’t looking forward to the tree climbing the next day, she was happy to have pleased her mentor. Plus when it came to training, choices were never a bad thing. It was still too bad they weren’t going to the river, despite its shallowness, but there were worse ways to spend a day than hunting.
Her rounded ears twitched as the warrior’s tail brushed them lightly. The apprentice glanced back towards the elder’s den, woven out of flexible willow branches and roots. Minnow couldn’t see her mother, a frail tabby named Stripetail, but she made a mental note to visit her just as soon as the duo returned. She tried to make an effort to visit every day.
With that, Minnowpaw ran to catch up to her mentor, her short legs taking two strides for every one of the warrior’s. Soon enough she was padding just behind Aspenfur, half bouncing from excitement with every step and silvery tail held high.
Ooc: Yeah that sounds good. I think it might be best for you to start the thread if you don’t mind, since Minnowpaw’s following Aspenfur? Just PM me and let me know what you think c:
