If Mothkit had to spend any longer in the nursery she was going to scream. She hated the smothering warmth of the nursery, the way she felt so restrained and protected. It was too hard to tell what was going on inside the confined walls of the nursery, with nests constantly being moved about and cats passing through regularly. The smell of milk and warm bodies pressed too close together didn't help things either. She needed out, and she really didn't care what her mother thought anymore. Mothkit scrambled out of the den she shared with the other kits of the camp, gulping downs breaths of air so that she could get her bearings in the camp.
The camp was better. Things were spread out and things didn't move around as often. The freshkill pile was always in the same place, and the dens didn't ever change their places. It made things easier. Mothkit settled outside the nursery, her fur fluffed out in agitation as she tried to clean the smells of the nursery off of her. Hopefully, the apprentice and warriors dens would be easier to get around in. At least the medicine cat den was always easy to find, with the smell of herbs firmly planted in Mothkit's mind after so many check ups.
Satisfied that she was back to smelling like herself instead of the milk-safe-warm smell of the nursery, the kit relaxed a bit. That was better. So, now what? Just sitting around like a lump sounded boring, and Mothkit didn't feel like being boring today. Maybe she'd go be a pest. But who should she pester? Oh, she had an idea!
Mothkit trotted forward, sweeping up her tail and holding her chin high. "I think I'm going to take over, now." The bossy kit announced to the camp. "You can call me Mothstar." She set right off to Highrock, trying to clamber onto the rock. Unfortunately, she was too small to actually climb up there and ended up sliding slowly down to sit grumpily at the base of the rock. "The first order of business is we get a smaller rock so I can get up there." She told the camp. "A smaller rock that smells nice."
Go on, peons. Get the lady her rock.

Littlestar finished his conversation with Yellowtail and leaped off the High Rock, look around the camp for a patrol join. He didn't want to make another one just for himself, but wanted to personally check the border between Windclan and Thunderclan. There had been slight tensions at the last Gathering. Not enough to break the peace the clans were so graciously experiencing, but enough for him to feel like he had to renew the scent markers with his own scent. A passive aggressive warning to Windclan cats that Thunderclan was here and strong.
He flicked his tail, observed the camp, before trotting towards the elders den. They were always interesting to talk to and it would be nice to hear from them. He hadn't checked in on them in awhile and he wanted to make sure the apprentices were bringing them good bedding and juicy fresh kill. As he approached the fallen tree, he watched a small kitten emerge from the nursery. She was one of Wrensong's litter, but he hadn't heard their names yet, only visited them when they were young. He knew that one of them was blind, but couldn't be sure.
He stuck his nose quickly into the elders den, but they were all sleeping, lucky cats that they were. He would ask them after his patrol then. He back away, turning when he had room and watched the tiny kitten fall off a rock. He quietly approached behind her, catching her last words spoken into nothing.
"A smaller rock that smells nice."
Littlestar sat down behind her, and offered a small piece of advice, "You can't use your claws to hold to stone, you'll only tear them. Grip with your pads and you should be able to stay up."

Mothkit startled at the sudden voice from behind her, her ears rotating to catch Littlestar's voice. Not use her claws, huh? Her ears flattened against her head and she screwed up her face in determination. She'd show this rock. She wasn't about to be defeated by a dumb rock! With a mewl that was probably meant to be a battle cry, Mothkit launched herself at the rock again. She didn't quite get it and slipped down again, her face brushing painfully against the stone. "Ow." She hissed. The rock was closer then she thought. "Dumb rock."
Alright, she'd be less flashy! Mothkit moved forward, pulling herself up slowly and carefully. Her breath caught in her throat as she realized that she was climbing further away from the ground, vulnerable without the ability to feel her way around with her whiskers. She felt terrifyingly vulnerable, but she hissed at herself for the weakness. Warriors weren't afraid! She was in the camp. She knew where she was. She dragged herself up, wobbling uncertainly at the top of the stone.
"I did it!" She told Littlestar in a breathless voice. "I did it! Snakekit could never climb the rock! But I can! I did!" The kit sat down, curling her tail around her paws. "I mean- Of course I did!" Her little chest heaved as she took in gasps of air, still battling off the panic from the disorienting height. It was strange to be up so high. What did the other thunderclanners see in climbing? After this, Mothkit was keeping all four paws firmly on the ground!
"I could have figured it out on my own." She told the tom confidently. "Thank you, though. I was being stupid." She ran a paw over her ears, preening over her conquest of the stone. "My name's Mothstar." Yeah, no.

So this was the blind kit. He knew she was Mothkit then. Her mother had refused to tell him about her disability until just last moon, and though he'd meant to check in on her, he hadn't found the time. Now he could see that she would struggle as a warrior. He knew she would be unhappy when her brother was made a warrior without her and right now he didn't have to heart to tell her. Maybe, Littlestar supposed, if she could prove herself capable then he would give her a chance. Any strong warrior was welcome.
She tried again, this time taking the rock slowly and he was pleased to see how quickly she learned. The adjustment was small but indicated patience and intelligence, something he valued for his warrior.
She nearly fell off the rock and Littlestar flicked his tail out to soften her fall. But she kept her balance and crowed, ""I did it! I did it! Snakekit could never climb the rock! But I can! I did!" She seemed to recover a little dignity and it dealt him a small blow to see the kit so serious even in a moment of victory. In his opinion, only senior warriors, deputies, leaders and the medicine cat were allowed to have no fun. "I mean- Of course I did!" Mothkit never looked up at him and it unnerved him to realize that she would probably never meet his eyes. ""I could have figured it out on my own. Thank you, though. I was being stupid. My name's Mothstar."
Littlestar's ears twitched in surprise. A confident blind cat. That was interesting. He meowed, "Mothstar is a good name. Which clan do you lead, Mothstar?"

Mothkit settled properly on the stone, the picture of a perfect little leader. She almost looked regal, with her tail curled to hide her little paws and her head held high. "The wind is blowing all the smells of the ravine to this rock." She took a deep breath, sightless eyes flicking closed. "It's a bit confusing. I like it better on the ground." It was easier to tell her way around, and on the ground she was supreme. Sure, she didn't have her eyes, but eyesight seemed awfully overrated to little Mothkit. Except for situations like this.
"I think I can tell my way around the camp better then most cats, sometimes." She told Littlestar confidently. "I remember all the smells. I know your smell, too. Every cat smells like you, even if it's faint. That means you must be high ranked, but you're a tom. So that means you're Littlestar, because I know Yellowtail's a she-cat and the deputy is a she-cat too. I'm right, aren't I?" She puffed up with pride, oh so pleased with her deduction. It wasn't really that impressive.
Oh. Clans had named, right? Mothkit fell into thought, her ears laying back in annoyance at her own scattered brain behavior. "Thunderclan." She told Littlestar. "I've taken over. For their own good, you know." She spoke with the most seriousness she could gather, her voice a tiny squeak of pride. "I'll give it back, but I have a list of demands." She was going to be the villain in this game! Playing the villain was pretty fun, even though she liked playing the hero even more. "Okay?"
"I want lavender and some feathers for my nest." She puffed up, trying to make herself look big and scary. She only managed to make herself look even fluffier. "Great cats need their sleep, you know. I can't make sure all these mousebrains stay out of trouble if I can't sleep." She was so smart. She spared a moment to preen a bit, grooming down the fur on her shoulders. "You can have some feathers too." She said, feeling gracious.

Littlestar watched the kit, observing how quickly she figured out who he was. She admitted to being confused by new scents, especially when they came too quickly to sort out. She wouldn't be able to go into battle, or travel to Mothermouth without an escort. She couldn't go into battle, he assumed, either because the on rush of cats would confuse her nose and make her vulnerable.
He did feel a jolt of pride when she told him that every cat smelled a little like him. It made him feel good to know that his influence over his clan was strong. It meant that he was taking a fair part in everyone's life. It meant he was a good leader, showing interest and evaluating each individual cat and attending to their needs and capabilities specifically. He knew that Cherrystar would be very proud of him. It made him glow inside.
"Thunderclan." The little kit called his attention back to her, finally answering his question. "I've taken over. For their own good, you know." Mothkit was very serious, and though he wanted to laugh, Littlestar kept himself stern. "I'll give it back, but I have a list of demands. Okay?" Before he could answer, she continued with the everlasting speech of a kit "I want lavender and some feathers for my nest. Great cats need their sleep, you know. I can't make sure all these mousebrains stay out of trouble if I can't sleep. You can have some feathers too."
"Oh I can, can I?" Littlestar teased back. "But what if I want to just take the clan back for myself, with a fight? I could do that you know. Several cats are still very loyal to me, Mothstar. You might want to reconsider."

"Yes, you may." Mothkit said with a lofty air. "I'm a nice leader, not a mean one. Mean leaders just get overthrown, that's what the elders say." She listened to the elders, because they taught her things they could use. She thought they were dumb sometimes, like when they talked about how things were better when they were young, but they did know a lot of cool things. Things that were very useful!
"But then a bunch of cats will get hurt!" Mothkit protested. "You're the leader. That means you have to protect us. It's easier just to give me my feathers, right?" With a flick of her tail, she drew her chin up. She was the smartest! Look, she was proving that she was capable of being a warrior! "Besides, I've already considered that and set traps for you!" That was sort of cheating, but she was a kit. No one could expect her to play fair.
"Like, um..." She racked her little mind for a trap. "I put mouse bile in front of the warriors den, so when they come out to help you they'll get their paws all smelly. That way, the cats on my side will know which ones are on yours!" Haha! She won! ... It sort of figured that Mothkit immediately thought up something that smelled bad for a pretend trap. "Dried oak leaves, too, so I'll hear any cats coming and no one can ambush me!" Puff! She was so smart. Sure, there were a bunch of holes in that plan, but it wasn't like this was a real exercise.
Give her a few moons. She hasn't quite grown into brilliance yet.
Actually, all this talk of mouse bile was giving her an idea... She stored it away in the back of her head, just in case. You never know when something involving mouse bile is needed.
"Don't make me put more mouse bile on the warriors, Littlestar." Mothkit threatened. "I have a lot and I'll put it on every cat in this clan." So much for being a nice leader. Maybe she forgot. Kits.

Littlestar had to admit; it was clever of her to use the mouse bile. Mothkit obviously knew how to think, and it was strange to deal with a cat who could not see. She seemed to think of the world in scents and sounds, rather than colors and figures. He wondered if her blindness had made her resourceful or if she was naturally imaginative. He felt a pang for the warrior she could have been.
He shook it off and instead asked, "Wouldn't all that mouse just turn your cats away? And wouldn't it confuse your nose? It could spread to your supporters and then you'll claw the wrong ear off."
He wanted to keep putting increasingly difficult situations in front of her. If he was honest, and it was a depressing honesty, she would probably never make a warrior but she would never become a burden. Mothkit was proving to be very clever and she might be able to help him plan attacks. He could use a thinker like her, to help him observe angles he could not.
"As for the oak leaves, do you plan to spread them out over the clearing? They'll be kicked up, you know. And if you only surround yourself, you'll be knocked out of the center very quickly." He purred, gently. "I think it will be easier if you just give me my clan back. I promise to hold you as a prisoner, instead of sending you into the forest to die alone."

"A true warrior fights even if it's hard and they don't want to." Mothkit declared. "If they won't fight just because it smells bad then they might as well just run back to the nursery!" She spoke with surprising vehemence for a kit, her eyes flickering open. She shook her head, her ears flattening. "I suppose it can get on my warriors. Maybe I should put garlic on them, so they smell strongly too." This was getting a bit complicated, but Mothkit was obviously getting excited by the idea. "That way, even if the mouse bile got on them, the garlic smell would be old enough that they would know what side they were on!"
"Why would I just scatter them around?" Mothkit was honestly surprised at the question. "It's more confusing then! I should obviously put them at the entrance of the dirt place, the emergency nursery exit, and the exit of the camp. Then I know if more cats are coming." Her ears twitched and she lifted her chin, a smug look on her face. "But even I can't hear that well over a fight. So I'll have to put a cat near each exit to add extra protection and to sound the alarm." She dipped her head, tapping her nose against the rock. "I shouldn't sit on here, either. I can't feel the ground when I'm up here."
"Send me to the forest to die alone?" She contemplated the possibility, her head tilted to one side. "Wrensong would be real mad at you, Littlestar!" She gasped, sounding more terrified for him then herself. She shuffled her paws against the surface of the rock. "You can have the clan and the rock in exchange for the feathers." She offered graciously. "Final offer and I won't tell Wrensong."
"Why do you like to sit up here, Littlestar? Don't you feel lonely? I do. I can't feel anything but the rock." She flexed her paws against the cool stone of the rock, her ears rotating to catch the sounds of the camp. "I can smell everything, but I think I like it better on the ground. I don't need to lose my eyes and my whiskers!"

"Why would Wrensong be mad?" Littlestar asked, curiously. "I believe that she is completely loyal to her clan and it's current," he stressed the word, "leader, which would be me. She won't be pleased to have to send her favorite kit into exile."
Littlestar frowned quietly then stopped fearing the kit would think it was aimed at her. And then he remembered that she was blind. While he doubted that Wrensong would actually disobey a direct order, he certainly didn't want the fierce warrior queen angry with him. He was still very new to his leadership and the last thing he needed was a cat with sway affecting how every one viewed him. He was very well aware that leading was more than just making difficult decisions, it was also about politics.
Not that he was actually considering banishing Mothkit, but there was an ever increasing possibility that he would have to confine her to the elders den. And neither she nor her mother would want that. Other cats would understand his decision but he didn't need any cat doubting him. It would shake the clan and present itself as a weakness to others.
Shaking his head, he focused on answering Mothkit's questions, which were insightful and impressive for a very young cat. "No one should like sitting up on the Highrock, Mothstar. But like all warriors, leaders have duties, and being lonely is one of mine." He paused again, thinking. "And I'm not as lonely as you think. Every cat here is my family and I'm close to all of them, in different ways. Their trust and support makes me stronger and without them, I would be nothing. Without each other, Mothkit, we are nothing."

"I don't know." Mothkit said. "Wrensong is weird. She's always worrying about me. I think she should worry about Snakekit more." She huffed, running a paw over her ears. "I don't like how she fusses over me." She was almost old enough to be an apprentice. If her mother tried to hide her away in the nursery, how would she ever prove she could be an apprentice? She knew that her mother didn't believe she could be a warrior. It was as obvious as the rock under Mothkit's paws and the breeze against her fur. "To be honest, Littlestar, I think that she's the one that can't see."
After a moment of thought, Mothkit slowly inched her way down the rock. She didn't try to leap down, as she knew she would just embarrass herself in front of the clan leader. "You can have the rock." She told Littlestar. "I'm lonely enough." She visibly relaxed when her paws found the ground, slinking a few paw steps away from the rock. "I don't think I want to be a leader right now." She told Littlestar. "I want to take care of everyone, but not like that. Maybe later. I'll find another way for now. Maybe I'll put nice things in their nests." She turned her nose in the direction of the freshkill pile. "There are feathers there. Do you think Snakekit will help me take the feathers off the birds? Then I can put them in the warriors nests."
She listened to his explanation patiently, her ears flattened against her head. "What about the elders?" She asked. "How do they make you stronger? All they do is sit in the den and tell stories." She liked their stories, but she didn't see how they could help a leader. He must know what they had to say already. She waved her head back and forth, her whiskers ghosting over the blades of grass. Yes. She liked it better on the ground, where she knew where everything was. There were no sudden surprises, nothing that could sneak up on her when she was in her realm. "I want to make you stronger. How do I do that?"
"No one trusts me." She told Littlestar. "Does that mean I'm nothing? Mothnothing doesn't sound like a very good warrior name." She screwed up her face in an expression of disgust. "How do I make them trust me like they trust you?"

"Mother's are always worried about their kits." Littlestar admitted, keeping to himself that he worried about his entire clan like it was his kit. "If Wrensong is extra anxious about you, she must love you an extra amount." He thought about addressing her blindness, since she'd been so open about it, but he wasn't exactly sure how to approach the problem without making her feel like she couldn't help. She was a challenge for him.
Mothkit wiggled off the rock and he was impressed with how graceful the kit was. She wasn't in any more control of her body than other kits her age, but she seemed to be handling herself well. He tried to make a comment but was quickly distracted by her constant stream of conversation. Maybe this was why he didn't really visit the kits very often. He felt like he could never keep up.
As she talked, he observed that she seemed to be more comfortable about with her paws on the ground. He wondered what it meant to her, to be able to touch the earth. He sensed that she didn't see her disability as a disability and he wondered, if he was honest, he desperately hoped, that they could work to find away around it. Like all his warriors, he wanted to give them everything they could possibly want. If he was doubly honest, he was secretly developing a soft spot for the spunky little kitten.
"If you ask Wrensong, I'm sure the elders would love feathers in their bed." Littlestar wanted to teach this kit, which wasn't a new feeling, since he'd had two apprentices in the past, but sometimes, it was good to just have a willing ear. No wonders the elders loved when the kits visited. "Elders are useful. When I encounter situations I don't know how to handle, they might. Remember, Mothkit, they've been around for a really long time. They're practically ancient. And we have to respect the service they gave to the clan. We have to honor their skills to live as long as they have. I rely on them for their wisdom, as they rely on the clan for protection and survival."
Then he crouched, low, not quite invading her space, but close enough that their conversation became very very private. "Mothkit, you're blind. You know that and I know that."
He took a deep breath, trying to be as gentle as possible. He didn't want to have this discussion with her, not at this young age, but she'd brought it up, and he believed in honesty. "I've never had a blind cat in my clan and I don't know if you can be a warrior." Quickly, he flicked his tail across her shoulders, trying to comfort her. "I've already asked the elders, and they say that there has been blind warriors in the past. I want you to be a warrior, Mothkit. But you'll have to work twice as hard as other cats. You have to prove to me now that you can do even the simplest tasks. It's not going to be easy, and I'll be very honest with you. Mothkit, you might not make it. I cannot put you in danger and feel good about it. Your mother would have my tail, and you were right, she's very very scary. But she wouldn't be the only one angry. I would be very angry and Starclan would be very angry with me as well."
He sighed, slowly, feeling both anxious and relieved. "Mothkit, listen to me. No matter if you make it as a warrior or not, I want you to understand something very very important. You will never ever be nothing to this clan. Or to me. I value every kit, warrior, and elder under my protection. But after our discussion, it's become very clear that you are very very clever. You think with more than your heart and you're also very brave and curious. As you grow up, these qualities will only improve and I will need you to help me solve problems that I can't. You see things differently from others and that is something I value. I might not always agree with you, but I will always value you."
Then he sat back up, watching the kit, somewhat nervously. He added as an afterthought, not that it wasn't untrue. "Just for the record, Mothkit, I am rooting for you."
OOC: SORRY! I know it's long but Littlestar would totally use this moment to explain how things are. He's a somewhat young leader and sometimes, he can be brutally honest.

ooc: I've gotten a little clarification as to posting in threads, so I'll just post after littlestar jumps off the rock to talk to mothkit, if that's ok x3
IC: The burly feline leaped from High Rock, her landing not graceful in the slightest as she plopped on her hind quarters, trying quickly to regain her stance. "Hrmph", she would grunt, with a wobbly trot she padded back toward the thick bushels of ferns that served as entrance to her den. Turning, the medicine cat would watch as Littlestar conversed with Mothkit, her most frequent patient. The medicine cat admired the tenacity from the blind kit, as she didn't let her disability hinder her desire and passion to serve her clan. What might starclan have in order for this kit? Is she to be a shadow in the clan? No, Starclan wouldn't be that cruel, not to an innocent kit. That one was going to be special, she just knew it, just like Littlestar. Yellowtail would smile, recalling past memories in her warrior days, with then Littleclaw.
"How've much he's grown", she would think to herself, emerald eyes slightly gleaming at the dark haired tom, as he continued to talk to Mothkit. He too was special, when no cat else thought he'd be. He was too small, they said, not strong enough they said. Though he showed them, he showed them all, as he rose through the ranks, with enough scars to prove it. What she admired most more than anything was he straightforwardness, his blunt nature much like her own. Perhaps that is why he has been the only one that can put up with her. Her sly remarks glide off him, just like water on a riverclanner's hide. He was more than just their leader, her leader, he was one she could truly call a friend. Something that she hasn't really had the chance to explore in quiet some time.
Friendship, what seems like simple pastime, a passing phase in life to others, remains a deep mystery to her. It's amazing really, to be surrounded by members of the clan constantly, why does life feel so empty. Surely she knew this, as the life of the medicine cat is a life of solidarity, to serve and serve only. But was it so wrong to want more? Yellowtail could only wonder, shaking her head of the thought. "No, that kind of life, isn't meant for me, can it?", she would mew softly to her self, her ears flattening as she trudged through the ferns, her tail drooping behind her.
(Sorry for long arse post, I felt like you deserve it though since I kept you waiting for so long x3, Hope you enjoy <3)
