Ribbon frowned and pouted, her ears drooping. Fox had been reluctant to leave the shelter of the forest and she could just tell he was going to turn her down. She'd thought they were friends. He'd helped her and she'd made them laugh. Everyone knew that was how they made friends. It's exactly how she and Alex had become friends, only the roles were reversed.
But he even seemed offended when she'd offered, bristling and meowing, "“I won’t fit in anywhere. This is where we part. I won’t have anything to do with twolegs.” Then he frowned, like she was a bad idea too. He considered something, then a deep sadness filled his eyes. Ribbon liked his eyes, they were much prettier than hers. “I’m glad you're home safe, but try to stay out of the forest. I’m not the most dangerous thing out there.”
She shivered, fear creeping down her spine. She cast a wary glance at the trees but brightened with a realization. "But you'll protect me." She purred, smiling up at the larger cat, then continued to wheedle. "Are you sure you don't want to try out my basket?"

As the little cream kitten gave a light shutter Foxfang felt a sliver of dark satisfaction. The emotion was complicated, to be sure. Like watching a kit get stung by a bee, but knowing they’d never try to bother the painful animal again. Hopefully that show of fear meant that Ribbon would avoid the deadly things that lurked within the wood behind every leaf and log. But he was wrong.
As soon as the shiver had passed a purr was following upon its heels. The warrior furrowed his brow in slight befuddlement, but a part of him certainly thrilled at what she had spoken. Like a small song bird singing in a forest without stars. Feigning a calm collection of his wits, he leaned roughly against the nearest pine and flicked the end of his lifted ginger tail.
“Yes, I’ll protect you –if I can. But I won’t always be available.” His mew was low, deep and rumbling from his large form. For a moment his gentle green gaze flitted up to catch her lovely deep brown eyes. She was so soft. It was hard to find a desire to frighten something that seemed to scream out to be protected, it was even harder in that moment to imagine his own clanmates laying a claw upon her pelt. But they were all loyal warriors, unlike him. They would not hesitate to defend their clan from the most benign of threats.
“Ribbon listen. The forest is dangerous. If others of my clan were to catch you, or us, we’d both be in for a lot of trouble. I’m not strong enough to fight them off, and I’ve got kittens of my own that need me to watch over. You need to stay on the other side of your fence. Mixing worlds is never a good thing, trust me.” As he spoke the tom had pushed away from the trunk and padded up to the fence’s base. His dark eyes tried to communicate his point, and he did his best to look every bit the foreboding forest cat he was.
Gently, though, he leaned over with the intent to lick her between the ears. Something about her reminded him of his own precious young bundles, and he wanted to keep her safe. With that he turned tail and began to pad back into the forest. But for an instant he paused to give her one last long look. Please be safe?

Fox came closer to her, looming, but Ribbon wasn't at all scared. He had just promised to protect her; he wasn't going to break that. It was actually a little silly that he was trying, because honestly, she could practically see affection in his eyes. Baxter had the same look sometimes, when she was quiet or just waking up from a nap.
He mentioned things, that she didn't really try to pay attention to, because most of what he said went right over her head, like what was a clan and why wouldn't he be available? He lived out there in the forest. What else could he possibly be doing except hunting and scrounging in the bushes. He could nap, but then, of course, he could nap with her in her garden. Where he could also protect her. And they could explore the forest together, then she wouldn't have to keep bothering Alex all the time. Or Alex could come with them, and they could all three be best friends. Ribbon thought that even Baxter might like Fox.
Then Fox mentioned something about kits.
Ribbon interest was immediately perked. She liked kittens. She thought she did at least. She had liked her brother's and sister's when they were kittens. If she remembered correctly. Maybe she didn't. But she liked kittens.
"Can I meet them? I bet they're cute. They can come see my basket too, if they'd like." Then she frowned. "Why are they in the forest? Bring them here. A wild place is not a place for kittens. Go get them; they need furlackers."

Great StarClan.
Ribbon was certainly something. For a moment Foxfang hesitated a few more heartbeats, his tail whisked behind as if gesturing in a confused manner. He could not be certain that his words of caution had gotten to her, and the thought of the petite cream kitten wandering through the forest alone made his pelt crawl uncomfortably. But, she did seem worried about his girls being in the forest. Perhaps the feline had somewhat grasped the concept.
“They are safe where they are,” the warrior murmured, beginning to brood once more upon the matter. They were his life, his only reason for staying in ThunderClan. Without them the forest seemed void. It missed something, and forever would the ache plague him.
Contemplating darkly was certainly unbecoming, though, so the tom blinked rapidly before addressing the other. “I really must be going. Please, stay out of the forest?” After one last beseeching glance, Foxfang turned and silently disappeared into the dense darkness that seeped from between the moss laden trunks.

"Goodbye Fox!" Ribbon yowled as she scrabbled up her fence. "I'll come out and visit your kittens soon. I'm almost positive I like kittens."
She hefted her body over the fence, falling ungracefully back into her furlacker's garden. She knew he told her to stay out of the forest. But if he thought the forest was safe enough for little helpless kittens, then it's sure as tuna safe enough for her. And even if it wasn't, Fox must live very close to her, since he'd found her very soon. She never doubted for a second that he wouldn't protect her. He was a very kind cat in the end. He hadn't even tried to take a bite of her and really she appreciated it and he had a kittens which meant he was also secretly but not so secretly gentle because some female had to like him. Unless it was like with her mother who never really knew her mate but that was something the furlackers did and probably the wild cats didn't.
Ribbon yawned forgetting her train of thought and who could blame her because she'd just nearly died but didn't and she deserved a nap. She couldn't wait to tell Alex who'd be so jealous but she mustn't be caught by Baxter because he might decide she was extra dirty with Fox's scent all over her. She glanced quickly to each side but didn't see the larger cat.
Feeling proud and stealthy, she trotted towards the cat flap, when she heard, "Back so soon? You stink" And then she was cringing because that was Baxter's voice and he definitely didn't sound happy.
