When Minnowpaw reached the spot where Aspenfur had been standing only a few heartbeats ago, the older warrior was gone. But the apprentice refused to be discouraged. Her mentor couldn’t have gotten far, and she had left behind a fresh scent-trail that Minnowpaw could now detect. Now she understood a little more- it was like hunting, but with cats instead of prey. And she had to admit, stalking cats were a lot more fun than stalking prey-they were a lot smarter and harder to find.
With her dark pink nose close to the ground, Minnowpaw followed the scent as she padded along with increasing speed and excitement. Her tail quivered; she was definitely getting closer now. A rustle of grass only confirmed it, and she bounded forward towards the sound.
“There you are!” Minnowpaw shouted, batting at Aspenfur’s long tail harmlessly the same way she had done earlier. She felt like a kit playing with her mentor, not that it was a bad feeling. In fact, she quiet enjoyed it, and it showed as she bounced playfully around her mentor. “It took a while, but I finally found you!”
She paused for a brief moment, catching her breath in a few short pants. “Next time, I’ll find you faster,” Minnowpaw finished, her tabby fur fluffing up with pride. Hunting mice, catching her mentor, learning new skills-today was a good day.

Aspenfur purred in congratulations, sitting down and wrapping her long tail around her paws. It still tickled from where Minnowpaw had just batted at it. She liked to see her apprentice succeed, even though she had to eventually make it easier. But that was alright. They'd never covered tracking or battling in different terrains. She had done well for her first time without any instruction.
“Next time, I’ll find you faster." Minnowpaw panted.
Aspenfur gave her a moment to catch her breath. A harder breeze seemed to catch the grass, making it nearly bend in half, the burst of wind blowing against her face. She let the air buffer her face, sticking her nose into it, catching the scents floating upon it. She caught the smell of rain, thick and wet, and knew it was coming. If not this evening, then this night, when they were all tucked into their dens.
She turned her attention back to Minnowpaw. "What have you learned from our exercise today? Not just hunting mice, but also, hunting me."

Minnowpaw had been having so much fun she almost forgot that she was supposed to be learning. The young apprentice mimicked her mentor’s pose, tail tucked neatly around her small paws, as a strong gust of wind threatened to bowl her over. Her claws gripped the ground just to be sure she wouldn’t go tumbling.
“What did I learn? Let’s see…” The she-cat took a minute to consider her answer as her hazel eyes turned to the sky. She knew that Aspenfur would probably appreciate an intelligent one rather than an obvious one, and Minnowpaw could save the latter for when she was joking around with her friends. “I learned that mice can feel you, and they can be fast when they want to be, so I have to be quiet and careful. Oh, and my stance has to be right. And that cats are a lot smarter than mice and harder to find.”
She raised a pale colored paw to rub at the side of her face absentmindedly as she droned on. “But it’s more of a challenge that way, finding cats instead of prey.” There was a hint of a purr in her voice, suggesting that she was more than willing to take on that challenge another time. Prey was important, but so was defending RiverClan, and she couldn’t help but be secretly excited for battle training.

Aspenfur felt a tug of anxiety when she caught the spicy scent of excitement that flashed from Minnowpaw. She wasn't sure if she could teach the apprentice such aggressive moves. Ever since the attack and the everlasting scar across her haunches, she hated fighting. Oaktail had taken her into battle with barely any training; it wasn't his fault, but she just couldn't attack. Aspenfur would rather talk her way out of the situation than unsheathe her claws. And she could definitely talk.
"We'll get around to battle techniques soon." Aspenfur promised heasatantly, wondering if she could ask another warrior to cover that. It would be cheating, but, well. She just wasn't sure she could teach it well enough. Not with her attitude about fighting.
The wind breezed back quickly and Aspenfur shivered. "Gather your kills. We'll hunt on the way back to camp." She flicked her tail at Minnowpaw affectionately. "But you've got some elders to take care of."

A curious look crossed Minnowpaw’s face and confusion shone in her hazel eyes. She could tell that Aspenfur seemed… different; the apprentice didn’t know exactly how to explain it. Maybe she was worried about something, but the younger she-cat wasn’t about to pester her about it. They had a good day of training together, so why ruin it now?
Her expression was quickly replaced with one of a mix of excitement and exhaustion, a strange combination. Minnowpaw was proud of her catch, and tending to the elders meant she got to show off for her mother. It also meant work, but that was to be expected. Still, it didn’t mean she had to like it- she didn’t know a single apprentice who did.
She shouldered her way through the tall grass. The scents were surprisingly easy for her to find now; the smell of fresh-kill was much more recognizable than living mice. She scooped up her two mice and quickly returned to her mentor. Stripetail would be so proud when they returned back to camp and the apprentice could barely contain herself thinking about it.
“I’m ready if you are,” Minnowpaw meowed happily as she found Aspenfur again, though she was barely understandable with the prey in her mouth.
