A trembling within the thick gorse wall, its deep green needles rattling threateningly as a yellow petal dislodged itself from one of the few clinging flowers, was the subtle indicator of Sageflight’s arrival back to camp. The smooth, grey fur of her pelt slipped through the narrow entrance with ease, but on the contrary the vegetation clung to her rabbit obstinately. “mrruse hung” swore the feline through her prey’s coat as she worked her way into the clearing. With one last heave she became finally free of the grasping tendrils. Swiftly, then, she padded towards the high rock and settled her catch upon the bountiful pile at its shadowed base.
For a few heartbeats she simply studied the collection, clan pride chasing away the chill evening air. Greenleaf had indeed been kind to the forest, river, swamp, and moors. Every aspect of the forest was healthy and happy. It seemed a strange peace, and one could only wonder how long it would last. Sageflight shook her spotted head to chase away the troubling thoughts. No, there was no reason to suspect that the peace would be broken.
Casting her warm yellow gaze around the darkening clearing the grey cat looked for the fluffy brown pelt of Eaglestar. She hadn’t had a chance to speak to her since the patrols had been set that morning, and part of Sageflight yearned to spend time with the outgoing feline. There was something altogether pleasant about being around the leader, and the deputy found herself with a slight pang of unnecessary worry that something had befallen her.

The rustling of the thick foliage surrounding the entrance and a rather exasperated mew signaled the return of the night patrol which had been lead by none other than the large she-cat her deputy had been worrying about only moments before. As of that moment her long hair had been caught in the gorse - something that happened quite often - and a few moments passed before she managed to tug herself free, though her usually well kept coat was now frazzled and messy. But, as usual, the tall brown cat loped into camp with her tail held high, a bit of a smile on her face as she looked back to notice a few petals and leaves clinging desperately to her body. This seemed almost a daily occurrence for Eaglestar, and though she wished she could make the entrance a tiny bit wider, she knew that in doing so the Clan's defenses would be lowered, even by just a small amount; and that was not an option.
Yes, it was a time of peace, but in her mind and memory peace never lasted very long and it was only a matter of time before something happened - or something was found out. It seemed to be the way of things and though she tried her best to keep herself and her clan out of trouble, sometimes it found it's way to her instead. Sometimes in forms more... tantalizing than others. So to speak.
Golden eyes caught sight of warm liquid honey and she couldn't help but let out a small purr as the rest of the patrol dispersed and she padded toward her deputy, landing a quick friendly lick on the top of her head. "Good night for hunting I presume?" She asked with a grin, leaning back to attempt to best the mess her fur had become, using her sharp teeth to try to pluck a few petals from the dark mass of hair. She stopped for a moment and frowned slightly at Sageflight, tilting her shaggy head to the side. "Something the matter? You look worried."

Twin pools of troubled amber suddenly fixated upon a narrow gap within the gorse wall as the agitated clattering of needles announced the arrival of one rather fluffy brown cat. Relief flooded through the grey and white feline as the other approached unharmed and in good spirits. Sageflight watched, leaning forward involuntarily as if desiring to aid the leader in cleaning her pelt. Uncertain if the gesture would be appreciated she resisted the urge and instead kneaded the ground warily.
Eaglestar’s mew brought the deputy back from her anxious act, and she stilled her paws. “No, no, everything’s fine,” she said lightly, though her tone had a nervous edge to it. Within her white chest the she-cat could feel her heart racing widely. Avoiding the other’s eyes she let her gaze fall upon the freshkill pile, and sucked in a steadying breath. Something about the leader caused her nerves to act up unwittingly, and it was more than a bit disconcerting. While she had yearned to be by her side but a moment before, now the grey cat was wishing to be across the moors where her body could not give away her awkwardness.
“T-the hunting was indeed easy,” she finally choked out, attempting to regain her composure once more. “And the chase was pleasurably hard. It also looks like the others of my patrol had the same luck, though I returned later than them.” Thinking of her sister still prowling for prey, or talking to the RiverClan cat, Sageflight added “How are the borders? You didn’t run into any RiverClan cats did you?”

The leader surveyed her for another moment, eyes dubious as she watched her deputy's reaction to what seemed to her to be a simple question. Shrugging it off and chalking it up to the hot weather they were having, the heavily furred cat resumed her cleaning, flicking her tail against Sageflight's paws to try to comfort her. What was up with her recently? She shrugged it off again. Sageflight was more than capable of handling things when hey got out of hand, and she trusted her to know the difference between wrong and right. Unlike herself. But her smaller friend seemed so uptight lately, Eaglestar was starting to wonder if maybe she hadn't picked up a virus or sunstroke or something.
The large she-cat continued her bath, and her ears flicked at the mention of chasing prey; something she hadn't done in a while. "You'll have to take me hunting sometime; it's been far too long since these claws were used for anything more than scratching at ticks." She purred, waving her tail against Sageflights paws once again. Golden eyes looked up at the mention of Riverclan cats and she looked quizzically at her friend, then laughed out loud.
"If you're referring to the she-cat your sister and yourself spoke to earlier today, no, she wasn't there when we went back to that border." She said with a knowing smile glinting in her eyes before lowering her mouth back to the mats of hair. She was nothing if not nearly omnipresent in her territory; she would often wander the moors in her spare time, and often caught wind of conversations or patrols that wouldn't notice her due to their being focused on something else. It helped that she kept downwind of them too.

A strange, fluttering sensation sprung through the feline’s lean form as the leader’s tail brushed against the deputy’s delicate paws. While comforting, her kind action also caused the grey cat’s body to become once more a whirlwind of nerves. Sageflight shifted her weight awkwardly, lowering her head to smooth the dusty patch of white upon her chest. She had been so eager to discover the location of Eaglestar that her own grooming had been utterly ignored, and now as she watched the other return to a pristine condition she felt embarrassed for her own situation. Pull yourself together! You are being a ridiculous mess over nothing. While she reprimanded herself with the hope of calming down, instead the thought of nothing seemed to aggravate the feline even more. Nothing seemed to be a strong word, and was it really productive to shove off her own emotions so easily? Was it possible…
The other’s words drew her from her contemplation, and as the brown cat mentioned Sageflight’s chat with the RiverClan cat she felt her emotions coming under control. Yes, business, I can do that. Just keep it formal and informational. “Oh, yes. Tawnyflight was on my hunting patrol, but it seems that she got distracted before she could catch anything. I gave her the choice to stay out a bit later. It could be awhile until she returns. “ Her tone was cool and collected, even and lacking the normal warmth but also containing no further hint of the earlier anxiety. “It seems that RiverClan is still faring well, so perhaps the peace will continue after all.” In her haste to avoid her nerves, Sageflight utterly forgot the other’s invitation to go hunting. And instead of waiting for a response the she-cat dipped her head respectfully before rising to all fours. But the words of farewell, and an excuse for leaving, just would not come to the cat’s mind. Indecision clouded her thoughts and reluctance to part from the other’s presence grew with each heartbeat. Alternative, then, to leaving the deputy ended up just standing awkwardly in front of the leader with a slightly lost expression.

Eglestar nodded serenely as she listened to the slightly monotone mews that came from her sleek deputy; Sageflight always got a little boring when she talked about work. While her words were important, it wasn't much she already knew; she found that their conversations were sometimes forced, if not awkward altogether though she tried to keep it as upbeat and interesting as possible. She liked her much more when they were talking about more passionate and exciting things, like hunting, or the way the grass moved in the wind, the way a plump rabbit tasted in Newleaf, things like that. They had had many a good conversation not that long back, but... Maybe they were both a bit different now? Was that her fault?
She had been very fond of Sageflight in a... different way, not so long ago. Perhaps she had come on too strong? Whatever the cause, she had noticed the other feline acting odd toward her ever since. Eaglestar had assume it was because she hadn't wanted anything more out of the brief relationship, and had moved on since. Somewhat anyhow.
Finally releasing the last petal from it's curled brown confines, Eaglestar looked up at her friend with her deep golden gaze, wondering what she was thinking. She cleared her mind with a long blink, realizing there was no logical way of doing that. She withdrew her pale tongue and let out a bit of a yawn, her needle like teeth glinting in the dim light, nodding to Sageflight as she got to her paws with a twitch of a stretch.
"Well then," She grunted with a bit of a forlorn look toward the entrance, covered in the gorse she spent a better part of her day untangling from her fur, and shook her shaggy head, whiskers twitching. "Time to meet my doom." She chuckled, flicking her tail for her deputy to follow, long legs taking her to the entrance in a few lazy strides; she managed by without much tugging this time, though she was sure there was enough of her fur caught there over the seasons to make a new cat.
